The United States is the country that presents the most patents on “Blockchain”

The Blockchain (or chain of blocks) is a shared database that works like a book for the registration of blocks of information data and is the technological base of cryptocurrencies, which has been configured as the most popular and well-known form of use. of the Blockchain. This technology essentially comprises a set of notes housed in a shared database (on-line) in which the operations carried out (amounts, dates and participants) are recorded using a series of codes based on cryptographic keys that are distributed on a multitude of computers (anonymous people) which makes it a highly secure tool against possible crimes such as fraud, theft or manipulation. By way of example, an alteration of the data in a copy would be of no use, since said alteration would have to be made in all those computers where there is a copy of said information.

That is why more and more companies and institutions have material and economic resources to implement solutions based on Blockchain in various fields (not only in the economic field, but also in medical care, insurance or others) and whose results are being patented. In the first half of 2020, more registrations of this technology have been made than in all of 2019. Thus, the United States is at the head of the number of patent registrations related to Blockchain, with a total of 2,112 patents, surprisingly followed by the Cayman Islands with a total of 350 patents (mainly due to the presence of subsidiaries of the Chinese giant Alibaba) and a creditable third place for Canada with 118 patents. At a significant distance from these countries are Japan (108 patents), South Korea (87 patents) and China (77 patents).

This significant increase in new applications in 2020 allows us to clearly see that Blockchain is an increasingly mature technology that in the coming years will have a significant economic and social impact. Are European companies missing out on this technology?
